Killymurris (Glarryford) win Nelson Cup

IN the Nelson Cup final victory went to Killymurris (Glarryford) - 51-43 winners against 1st Broughshane.

The final of the Nelson Cup took place last week with holders 1st Broughshane taking on the joint winners of the League in Killymurris (Glarryford).

Killymurris started off the strongest in the 1st ends of all four games with M McCullough, D McCullough and S Dunlop all winning their 1st ends with only J Gaston putting any shots on the board for 1st Broughshane.

That all changed in the 2nd end with 1st Broughshane taking 7 shots of Killymurris across all 4 rinks to take a 9-5 lead.

Things stayed in the balance until the 5th end where A Hunter's rink took 5 shots from D McCullough's rink to lead 9-3 in their match and C Ramsey and C Wilson's rinks took 1 shot each to stretch their lead to 11 shots.

The lead remained at 11 shots after the 6th end with both teams scoring 4 shots each.

The 7th end saw M McCullough's rink take 1 shot from C Ramsey's rink to draw their match 5 all.

J Gaston's rink took a further 2 shots from J McWhirter's rink to win their match 9-2. S Dunlop's rink took 1 shot from C Wilson's rink to win 7-4.

But it was Killymurris's rink skipped by D McCullough who took 6 shots from A Hunter's rink to pull back their score from 10-3 to 10-9 and therefore bringing the overall at the end of the 1st half to 28 - 23 in 1st Broughshane's favour.

Second half

The 2nd half matches got underway with 1st Broughshane extending their lead by a further 2 shots but Killymurris pulled back 5 shots from the 2nd end to narrow 1st Broughshane's lead to 2.

Killymurris's D McCullough's rink raced into a 10-0 lead in their match to put them in the lead for the first time in the game taking a 2 shot lead into the 4th end of the games.

1st Broughshane steadied the ship somewhat in the next ends with Killymurris gaining only one further shot to lead by 3 shots.

The 5th end saw Killymurris take shots in all 4 rinks to extend their lead to 10 shots.

But 1st Broughshane fought back in the 6th end to recover 4 of the 10 shots to narrow Killymurris's lead to only 6 shots.

It was Killymurris who held on and won by 7 shots in a closely fought contest.
