ONE of Ballymena’s best known retailers has become the latest victim of harsh trading conditions.
McKillens Shoes of Church Street - a prestige business which has been a major attraction for customers from all over Northern Ireland - will close its doors for the final time within the next few weeks.
The closure process will begin on Tuesday when the store will shut to prepare for the final weeks of sale.
As part of that process, the McKillen family have urged anyone with outstanding gift vouchers to use them right away.
The McKillen family issued the following statement on Monday morning.
“It is with deep regret that we announce the closure of our family business after 100 years.
“We are grateful for the privilege of serving the people of Ballymena and beyond for many generations.
“Their support has been, and is, greatly appreciated.
“We want to pay tribute to the dedication of our loyal staff, many of who have spent their working life with us.
“They have greatly contributed to the success of the company for many years.
“Despite having taken measures to reduce running costs, the increased overheads, online shopping and the demise of the high street have all contributed to our decision to cease trading at this point.
“These have and continue to be challenging days and this is a decision that has not been taken lightly.
“To all our staff and customers, we thank you sincerely for your support and understanding.
“We commence a closing down sale on Wednesday, February 11 and look forward to seeing everyone there. Anyone who has gift vouchers for our company, please call and use them.
“Many thanks, the McKillen family.”
