A new community-led initiative, W.A.V.E.S (Welcome. Accept. Value. Enjoy. Shine.), is making waves in Ballykeel by putting children with additional needs at the heart of everything they do.

Formed by a group of passionate parents and professionals in partnership with Ballykeel 2 & District Community Association, W.A.V.E.S was born out of a shared concern: children with additional needs were being left behind, especially during school holidays and weekends. With no inclusive local activities or safe spaces, families felt isolated and unsupported.

Determined to change that, the group began small—introducing quiet hours at community events and launching “lads, Dads and Dames ,” a monthly stay-and-play evening designed to support fathers and their children in a relaxed, welcoming environment. The response was overwhelmingly positive, proving that even small steps can lead to big change.

Now, thanks to generous funding from Radius and support from local businesses, W.A.V.E.S is launching its first inclusive summer scheme. The programme will welcome 48 children into a safe, nurturing space filled with arts, crafts, music, movement, and sensory play—led by trained staff who understand and celebrate each child’s unique needs.

More than just a summer scheme, this initiative offers vital respite for families and a chance for children to thrive, connect, and shine.

W.A.V.E.S is just getting started—but it’s already proving that with community, compassion, and commitment, inclusion is possible.
