ABLE Cadet (AC) Sophie Thornton, a Year 10 student at Cambridge House Grammar School and an avid member of Ballymena Sea Cadets, had an exceptional experience as the only Sea Cadet from Northern Ireland selected for a prestigious two-week voyage aboard the TS Jack Petchey.

Sophie was part of the D-Day Commemorations.

The TS Jack Petchey, along with other vessels in the Offshore fleet the TS Royalist and TS John Jerwood, played a significant role in these commemorations.

Upon arriving in France, the cadets were divided into groups to participate in various commemorative services.

Some cadets attended the services at Bayeux, while others, including Sophie, attended the ceremonies at Pegasus Bridge.

Sophie took part in extensive practice sessions for the event on Thursday.

Her dedication and commitment culminated in a significant role: laying the wreath of Remembrance, a moment of deep honour and reflection.

Unlike the other vessels that returned to base after the ceremonies, Sophie's voyage aboard the TS Jack Petchey will continued until the following Friday.

During this extended journey, Sophie underwent her Watch Leader qualification in the French waters, marking an important step in her cadet training and leadership development.

Sophie’s participation in the D-Day Commemorations has been a memorable and enriching experience, both in honouring the past and advancing her future in the Sea Cadets.

This voyage not only allowed her to pay tribute to the heroes of D-Day but also provided invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth.’
