BROUGHSHANE & District Community Association have installed their first permanent Speed Indicator Display (SID) to digitally show the speed of vehicles approaching the village.
The Association were pleased to receive grant assistance through the Police and Community Safety Partnership to purchase and install it.
The SID clearly indicates whether an approaching vehicle's speed is above or below the speed limit. If the vehicle is below the speed limit, the display highlights the MPH in green. However, if the vehicle is traveling over the speed limit, the MPH is displayed in red with an additional flashing warning for the approaching vehicle to ‘SLOW DOWN!’.
Lexie Scott, Chairman of the local Community Association commented, “Speed Indicator Signs have proven to be an effective method in calming traffic.
“Broughshane's main roads are particularly busy with pedestrians, school children and cyclists, many of whom need to cross the village's roads. As more traffic passes through Broughshane village, it becomes crucial for approaching vehicles to pay special attention to the village’s speed limits”.
It's important to note that this road traffic calming system does not monitor or report individual vehicle’s speed.
However, it does allow authorities to monitor average speeds at different times of the day and week.
This information will help traffic law enforcement agencies better identify appropriate times to monitor speeding vehicles, resulting in issuing necessary warnings or prosecutions to protect our community from careless and inconsiderate drivers.
If the permanently installed SID traffic calming system proves effective, Broughshane and District Community Association will consider installing other traffic calming systems on other key approach roads to the village.
