Six of the newly appointed High Sheriffs for Northern Ireland were recently hosted at Oranmore House by Patricia Perry, High Sheriff for County Antrim.
High Sheriffs are the Monarch’s judicial representatives.
Each of the six counties, as well as the County Boroughs of Londonderry and Belfast have a High Sheriff who serves for a twelve month period.
The position of High Sheriff is the oldest office under the crown and dates back to medieval times. Originally with responsibility for law and order as well as the collection of taxes the duties are now primarily ceremonial.
High Sheriffs today attend a range of events across their respective areas. They are also expected to greet any member of the Royal Family who may be visiting. After the death of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II it was the role of the High Sheriff to formally proclaim the accession of the new Monarch within their County.
After a delicious meal provided by Oranmore the new appointees had the opportunity to share their hopes for the year ahead.
Patricia commented on their first get together: “It was great to meet the newly appointed High sheriffs from each of the counties. I hope that we will be able to use our office to support and encourage the incredible work of volunteers across the Province.”
