BALLYMENA teen Ethan McCormac has been crowned Northern Ireland Topper 4.2 Fleet race champion!

He won the recent Royal Yachting Association (RYA) N.I. round at Royakl North of Ireland Yacht Club to put the finishing touches on taking the coveted title.

The 13-year-old Ballymena Academy lad is a member of Cushendall Sailing and Boating Club.

He was part of the eight fleets, and more than 150 sailors, involved in the thrilling weekend of sailing at Royal North.

Ethan, from Galgorm Lodge, has been sailing for the past three years - the last eight months in a more competitive mode.

His dad John first got Ethan interested in sailing when they lived in Dubai - and the talented teen has not looked back. The Youth Championships brought this season’s competition scene to an end.

But within a couple of weeks Ethan will be on the seas again, involved with the RYA Northern Ireland Youth Performance programme which develops young sailors who have aspirations to sail internationally.

Ethan started sailing through some courses at Cushendall Sailing and Boating Club. .

The recent NI Youth championships were the last major on the race calendar.

Ethan collected his RYA Youth championship title award from Jackie Patton, the Chairman of the RYA.

Matt McGovern, RYA Northern Ireland’s High Performance Manager, said it was a great weekend of racing with some very challenging conditions at times.
