THE Michelin Athletic Club will be closing its doors for the final time on August 31, 2018.

The popular club posted a statement regarding the closure on their facebook page on Thursday, August 16.

It read: “It is with sincere regret that we inform you that The Michelin Athletic Club Company will cease trading after 31st August 2018.

“This decision has been taken predominantly due to the current financial climate, and the closure of the Michelin Tyre PLC, Ballymena

“As a result of this decision, we will not be taking any more bookings.

“This club has been involved with a huge number of charity and community events and we are extremely proud of all that we have accomplished in these glorious years, and could not be more thankful to those customers and suppliers who have believed in us and supported the MAC (Michelin Athletic Club).

“On behalf of Michelin Athletic Club, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your loyal and continuous support shown to us over the years.”

The statement was met with dismay and sadness from loyal customers and users of the complex who were keen to highlight the contribution the MAC has made to the local community trough the years.

Debbie Chestnutt posted: “Thank you for all your support from Good morning Ballymena.”

Another commented: “Sad news. I spent 15 great years working in the MAC.

“It was like a second home for me and Gerry and Margaret treated me like a second son when they lived there.

“I made many great friends, who I don’t get to see often enough now, but I won’t forget.

“Many a busy night working and quite a few just drinking. Always plenty of craic and always loads of banter.

“So many great memories from a big part of my life. Sorry to see you close.”

Ballymena United Allstars Ladies Football Club also reacted to the statement: “We’re very sorry to hear this.

“Thanks for everything you’ve helped us with over the years - the MAC will be much missed. Best wishes to all the staff. A sad day.”

Other posters also weighed in: “Charlie Havelin and his team have run The Michelin club amazingly for all these years.

“You will all be sorely missed.

“I looked at you all as great neighbours. Best of Luck for the Future.”

Another said: “So sad to hear this, a club used by a large part of the local community and people farther afield.

“Good luck to all the staff who work there, wishing you all the very best in what you all do in the future.”
