U12s Youth Excellent form Continues with Cup Win

UNDOUBTLY performance of the week goes to Sean McKay’s U12s in their excellent penalty win over high-flying Oxford Sunnyside Colts in the Daily Mirror Lisburn Junior League Cup.

On target for the Northend boys were Eddie Smyth with a brace, Feargal McKay and Michael O’Donnell.

(Nend won 3-1 pens)

A run of 3 corners in succession saw Eddie Smyth rise to power a header goalward which was deflected to the net.

Sunnyside drew level from a corner. The blues pushed hard for a winner, the excellent Stewart set McKay through down the right his thunderous half volley narrowly rising over the bar.

So, it was down to penalties to decide the outcome.

Nellins saved the first, Eddie Smyth slotted home, Sunnyside hit the bar, Livingstone was denied by a fine save, Nellins saved again, McKay found the bottom corner to keep the blues 2 up. Sunnyside scored but O'Donnell fired home to leave it 3-1 with only one penalty remaining.

Northend started playing very well moving the ball well. Against the run off Enzo scored.. Two minutes later Enzo scored again

Oxford clipped the crossbar from a long range free kick and opened the scoring shortly after.

Kurtis Adger went on a marauding run down the right-hand side and was upended within the opposition's box. Euan Pirie collected the ball and confidently despatched the resulting penalty.

Northend continued to push and got their rewards midway through the half when a delivery from a corner caused confusion within the Oxford box and Sean McDermott was on hand to smash the ball into the roof of the net. 

Northend were awarded a second penalty when Finn Connon was fouled. Sean McDermott scored the resulting penalty.

Northend took the lead on 20 minutes with a contender for goal of the season. Tyron Mitchell, Connor McKenna and Kai Barr linked together a series of one-touch passes that ripped open the Hillsborough defence and Owen Campbell smashed a first-time effort in off the underside of the cross bar with his left foot.

Northend were playing some great football at this point and almost doubled their lead when Lewis Hector outpaced his marker to fire a shot narrowly over the bar. Half-time 1-0

Hillsborough equalised and then netted the winner.

Man of the match: Every player put in a tremendous effort.
