Poor performance from Firsts sees St Mary's take three points. It is a disgrace the way these players behave in what should have been a forgone conclusion.

ON Saturday (16 September) the first team took on St Mary’s in the first round of this season’s Premier Cup and produced a really bad performance on the day.

The game got underway with both teams testing each other out in the opening 20 minutes with no real shots on goal.

The first effort fell to Spence from a McIlroy corner the striker got a flick on the ball from two yards out but the visiting ‘keeper made a great point blank save to his left.

The Portadown side forced a number of corners in the first half but couldn’t hit the target with any real chances.

On the stroke of halftime McIlroy went close as he picked the ball up in midfield, before driving at the defenders and hit the foot of the post from the edge of the area.

Half time: Moneyslane 0-0 St Mary’s.

A change of shape at half time saw Slane come out strong and take the game to the visitors.

The deadlock was broken on the hour mark when Spence found the top corner from 25 yards out to open scoring, 1-0.

Moneyslane almost doubled their lead minutes later when Ringland broke into the box and curled an effort goalward, but the ‘keeper made a great stop to his left to push the shot around the post.

With 70 minutes on the clock the visitors were handed a lifeline when a calamity piece of defending left their striker with the simplest of tap-ins from six yards out to level the scores, 1-1.

Moneyslane heads were down when only a matter of minutes later the visitors doubled their lead from a corner from the right saw their man coast in at the back post unmarked to slot home for 1-2.

With 10 minutes remaining Moneyslane forced a number of corners with centre back Larmour hitting the crossbar from a yards out and the rebound saw the same player and Hainon go inches from poking home the equaliser.

St Mary’s almost added a third on 85 minutes when their striker fired a shot across goal and wide of the right hand post.

With Moneyslane throwing caution to the wind committing players forward, the visitors added a third on the stroke of full time when their winger raced forward and finished from inside the area, 1-3.
