LOCAL man Darwin Smith had a successful bank holiday weekend, winning the Gold Cup in the F2 class at Oulton Park.
Darwin became the latest driver to etch his name into the Oulton Park history books with two victories in the Historic F2 FIA International Race Series to claim this year's edition of the Historic Gold Cup this weekend.
The 2015 European F2 Champion beat a 25 strong car grid with competitors from America, Italy, Germany, France, Switzerland and England.
The Gold Cup is a very prestigious event previously won by Sir Sterling Moss, Sir Jackie Stewart, Jim Clark, Jack Brabham and David Kennedy to name a few previous winners who later became top Formula 1 drivers.
Prior to the event Jackie Stewart actually wrote a special note wishing all competitors his best regards for the weekend ahead.
He had a strong qualifying lap which earned him pole position by 2.2 seconds at an average speed of 102.5mph.
Infact, the last time an F2 car lapped at over 100mph average was 40 years ago when they had no chicanes and on the grounds of safety the circuit added another two chicanes to help make the circuit safer and reduce speeds.
