MIKE Carroll is a true 'ironman' in the world of sport - and has a GOLD medal to prove it.
The 65-year-old mixed it with the best and won his age group in the recent Ironman event at Masstrict, Limburg in the Netherlands.
Speaking to Guardian Sport the proud title winner bluntly admitted the Ironman event was not for the faint hearted.
“It was a hard, hard event," he said. "I would actually describe it as being brutal."
But the Caherty Road man did what was required to complete the 3.8k swim, 180.2k cycle and 42.2k run and claim the prestigious title.
Mike, a member of Ballymena Road Club, has now qualified for the World Championships in Hawaii in October.
But he says he has just not got the time to recover from the Ironman exploits to prepare for such an event.
Mike does intend competing one day in the World in Hawaii - but it won't be this year.
The Project Manager at H. and J. Martin Lagan Construction Group in Belfast, trains 15 hours a week.
