No Surprises As Cushendall Demolish Clooney Gaels

Thursday, 17 August 2017

IT was all too easy for the Ruairi Og's as they got their Antrim senior hurling championship campaign under way.
At Slemish Park they blew Clooney Gaels out of the water with a 20 point victory and, if truth be told they should not run into any road blocks until the semi finals.
Short a player from late in the first half it didn't seem to effect the Cushendall men in any way as they cruised to a quarter final game with Cloughmills.
This contest was all over after 10 minutes despite the Gaels first off the mark with a P.J.O'Connell point.
Taunted by such presumption Donal McNaughton, Sean McAfee and Paddy McGill fired home goals and the Ahoghill side were doomed.
The South West side were unable to take any comfort from quite a few missed chances by the opposition and, despite these they raced into an 11 point lead.
It soon became 13 before relief of some sort came to the Clooney side when Sean McAfee was shown red, minutes from the break after an incident with O'Connell who was got away with yellow.
It had absolutely no effect on the Cushendall side who added another point, from David Kearney in first half injury time, to lead 3-8 to 0-3 at the halt.
The Gaels, despite the inevitable outcome did produce some heroics, particularly at the back where they prevented further goal carnage.
After some adjustment to their limited panel the South West men made a spirited start to the second half with Owen Neeson and P.J.O'Connell knocking over points, scores which proved nothing more than a smokescreen.
