Narrow victory for Instonians over Ballymena

Thursday, 22 July 2010

INSTONIANS' 1st XI continued their recent good form with a hard fought victory against Ballymena at Eaton Park on Saturday, July 17. Batting first openers John Stevenson and Davy Jacobs got into their stride early on and proceeded to put on a record breaking stand of 246 for the first wicket.
Both Batsmen completed their centuries with John falling for 106 and Davy finishing unbeaten on 123.
In the end, Inst reached a total of 255 for 3 with a few late wickets falling in the chase for extra runs.
In reply, Balymena lost opener Carl Williams for 1 with only 10 runs on the board but then Davy Kennedy and professional Kaushik Aphale steadied the ship with a stand of 56 before Davy was run out for 14.
Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals but while Aphale was still at the crease Ballymena looked capable of pulling off the victory.
Davy Jacobs followed up his century by taking 3 for 44 from his ten overs and then crucially holding the vital catch to dismiss Aphale in the 49th over for a fine 115.
A run out in the final over sealed victory by 12 runs.
Inst: 255 (D Jacobs 123*, J Stevenson 106).
Ballymena: 243 (K Aphale 115, D Jacobs 3 for 44, R Sheard 2 for 59).
