Glenravel crowned champions

Thursday, 15 July 2010

GLENRAVEL weren't too pleased when they were relegated to third division football last season.
On Sunday they proved that their attitude was not too far off the mark when they beat nearest rivals St Endas by two points to win the title and bounce back into Division 2.
It ended 1-9 to 0-10, giving them the title with still one game remaining.
They won fourteen, drew two and lost just once in accumulating their thirty points.
They knew this game would be a tough one and so it turned out. Never more than a few points separated the sides with the tie level on three occasions in the second half.
It was the Glengormley side which set the early pace and they had three scores on the board in the opening twelve minutes.
The opener came from Chris McAfee with Paul Darby, who scored all of the remainder of their ten point total, picking up back to back scores.
It took the home side some fifteen minutes to get up and running but when they did they were impressive. Chris McAukley raised the first flag with David Higgins following with another almost immediately.
Paddy Bell got the only goal of the game in the twenty first minute and what a valuable strike it turned out. Davey and D.J.Birt did the spade work with Bell making no mistake from ten metres out.
When Josh McKeown followed with a pointed free and another fine point from play, it seemed as if the Glensmen would run away with it but a couple of late Darby points and a great save from Martin Craig, when he denied Davey Birt, left St Endas just two back at the break, 0-5 to 1-4.
