Michael Glass scored 25 in Ballymena’s defeat at Carrickfergus.
BALLYMENA'S 1st XI slumped to their third straight defeat at Carrickfergus last weekend when the home side claimed a comfortable 8-wicket victory.
Chasing 171 runs for victory the home lost just 2 wickets as Taiaroa (77) and Gelderbloem (42) saw them through with an unbeaten 110-run partnership.
When batting though Ballymena again lost early wickets when Robert (5) and David Kennedy (1) were dismissed with only 7 runs scored. Carl Williams (27) and Kaushik Aphale (39) then put on a 60-run partnership but after the third wicket fell, Ballymena lost their final 7 wickets for 103 runs with only captain James Kennedy (21), Andrew Kirkpatrick (13) and Michael Glass (25) reaching double figures.
In reply Carrickfergus lost their first wicket with the score on 28 when Matthew Purse had Cowden (4) caught behind by Kirkpatrick. Although fellow opener Gilmour (39) was trapped leg before wicket by Aphale with the score on 61, New Zealander Taiaroa and South African Gelderbloem saw the home side home with 6 overs to spare.
This weekend Ballymena have a crucial match when they travel to fellow strugglers Downpatrick who like Ballymena have 2 wins from their 8 matches following their 5-wicket defeat at Instonians last Saturday.
Batting first Downpatrick lost wickets at regular intervals and nobody was able to occupy the crease for long enough to register a significant score. Only No.3 batsman Farrukh, No. 7 batter McKee and last man in Magowan reached double figures with 22, 15 and 11 respectively as Downpatrick were dismissed for just 100 in 39 overs.
In reply Instonians who were without international players Andy White and Rory McCann eased to their target inside 23 overs although they did lose 5 wickets in the process.
Opener Stevenson top scored with 24 as Moleon finished unbeaten on 16 with a couple of sixes to finish the game. For Downpatrick Farrukh took 3 wickets for 30 in his 8 overs with Magowan and Mullan each grabbing a single wicket.
When the two sides met earlier in the season at Eaton Park Downpatrick were 6-wicket winners after they reached their 194-run target in the 48th over. In the Ballymena innings there were solid contributions from James Kennedy who hit an unbeaten 38, and openers Carl Williams (28) and Stephen Colgan (20).
