Pitches protest!
Thursday, 28 January 2010
People protested at the lack of playing pitches at Wakehurst last Thursday night - outside the Sports Awards evening in Ballymena.
Up to 70 people braved the harsh rain and wind to make their point in a peaceful get-together outside the Braid Arts Centre.
The protesters want to see the Wakehurst area receiving fair treatment.
Protest organisers claim that Ballymena Council is spending money elsewhere and leaving them behind as far as soccer pitches and facilities go.
There have been pitch problems at Wakehurst for over ten years.
Football enthusiasts have been in contact with MP, Ian Paisley, and his MLA son, Ian Junior, urging them to help in their fight for proper pitches.
“It seems a lot of money is being spent elsewhere in the Borough. But it is a disgrace that Wakehurst is being overlooked," said a spokesman for protesters.
“We do not wish to bad-mouth the Council, but we need our pitches sorted out, now!"
Saturday Morning League secretary Brian Montgomery has added his voice to the problem.
“We have lost a pitch at Wakehurst and are in the process of losing two others. We have been promised plenty, but nothing has been delivered," fumed Mr. Montgomery.
In March Ballymena Councillors are to inspect the pitches and facilities at each of the grounds in the Borough.
