PRINCE Harry is officially the new royal pride of Ballee!
As soon as word got around that his first ever public engagement in Northern Ireland would be to open the new regional ambulance headquarters in Ballymena, local residents flocked to greet the fifth in line to the throne.
And His Royal Highness endeared himself to those who had waited patiently to see him in the pouring rain last Thursday by staging an unscheduled walkabout.
His mother Diana, was dubbed the 'People's Princess' and her style has clearly rubbed off on Prince Harry.
Ignoring the rain and wet grass, he made his way over to perimeter fence at the ambulance station and chatted, shook hands and posed for pictures.
Earlier Prince Harry was given a tour of the state-of-the-art facility before unveiling a plaque to officially open the building.
Anne Magill was one of the lucky ones who spoke to him.
“I told Prince Harry it was my birthday and he asked what age I was. I told him I was 66, and he said that was a great age!
“I also told him he looked like his mother and he said thank-you for that." The new building replaces the old ambulance station on the Braid Valley hospital site and houses 43 staff, five emergency ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and three non-emergency patient care vehicles.
Prince Harry later carried out engagements in Belfast and Hillsborough.
