THE race to qualify for the 2018 National Hot Rod World Championship roars off the starting grid at Ballymena Raceway on Friday evening (7.15pm).
The National Hot Rods are a firm favourite with local fans.
The Speed Kings of the ovals begin the trail in Ballymena which leads to the World Final at Ipswich next July.
The dust has only just settled on 2017 final, which brought a third win for England's Chris Haird.
Waterford's Dave Casey finished in the runner-up spot with Scotland's Robert McDonald in third.
John Christie from Crumlin was the top local finisher in fifth position with outgoing champion Adam Maxwell in sixth, while Broughshane's Jaimie McCurdy made it to the end of the gruelling 75 lap race in 16th spot.
The National Hot Rod class in the province is currently bursting at the seams with talent and the new qualifying series is sure to be hotly contested once again.
Former World Champions Maxwell, Christie and Glenn Bell are expected to figure prominently along with current Northern Ireland Champion Shane Murray and reigning British Champion Adam Hylands.
Carl Sloan from Kells and Cullybackey's Phillip McCloy will be hoping to get their name in the frame as well.
An extra incentive for the racers on Friday night will be the Richard Turtle Memorial Cup.
The handsome trophy is raced for annually to remember former Raceway favourite Richard Turtle and will be presented to the winner of Friday's National Hot Rod final.
Current holder is Keith Martin from Dungannon.
