A NURSE from Martinstown has been hailed a heroine after saving the life of an English holidaymaker in Portugal.
Yvonne Hegarty, who was on holiday with her partner, came to the rescue after the man suffered a heart attack at a coach/restaurant wayside stop halfway up a mountain outside Albufeira.
The staff nurse at Antrim Area Hospital knew exactly what to do when ex-Londonder Robin Chambers, now living in Nottingham, suffered the heart seizure.
Speaking to the Guardian this week Yvonne said Mr. Chambers had technically died - but after working on him for half an hour - with some assistance from an Irish nurse - she revived him and literally saved his life!
And she spoke of her "amazement" and "shock" when a few days later she received a call from Mr. Chambers - thanking her for bringing him literally back from the dead.
“I honestly did not think he would make a recovery," recalled Yvonne.
“He was very ill. As I worked on him I knew he was dead. He had no pulse and was not breathing."
Yvonne said she was amazed to receive a telephone call a few days later.
