NEW North Antrim MP, Ian Paisley, said yesterday, that the DUP now had a "once in a lifetime" opportunity to wield significant influence over national politics.
Writing exclusively in the Guardian, Mr Paisley, who secured a landslide victory on Friday, also said he believed the question of a border poll had been consigned to the "dustbin" after the result.
Prime Minister, Theresa May, is relying on the DUP to prop up her minority government, but there are fears that her political dependence on Mr Paisley and his colleagues could destabilise the talks aimed at restoring devolved government.
In his article Mr Paisley said: "I warned unionists that they needed to wake up and vote for the strongest unionist candidate, because without a solid vote, Sinn Fein would up the campaign for a United Ireland border poll.
“That call for a poll has been consigned to the dustbin as a result of this magnificent vote."
He added: "Not for generations have Ulster men and women wielded so much power and influence. We must do so responsibly.

Sinn Fein candidate, Cara McShane, said: "I want to personally thank everyone who came out and voted for me and Sinn Féin in this election.
