THE new mayor of Mid and East Antrim, expected to be Larne DUP councillor, Paul Reid, will be elected at the annual meeting in the Braid Town Hall in Ballymena tonight (Tuesday).
He will replace outgoing Mayor and party colleague, councillor Audrey Wales, who has presided over a very busy year in office.
Under the D.Hondt system for apportioning key positions of responsibility, the DUP is entitled to hold both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions in 2017/18.
The Guardian understand the deputy mayor is likely to be Carrickfergus councillor, Cheryl Johnston.
Several council chairs and vice chairs and a number of other positions will also be filled at tonight's meeting.
Due to having 16 councillors on the 40 member Council, the DUP has held the Mayor position for the three years since inception with councillor Wales succeeding councillor Billy Ashe, who was the first Mayor.
However the position will change in 2018/19, the fourth and final year of the current mandate, as the Ulster Unionist Party is entitled to the First Citizen's post.
