‘Hooligans’ mar Sky Blues night of joy!

Thursday, 18 May 2017

POLICE are appealing for help in identifying 'hooligans' who marred one of the greatest nights in Ballymena United recent history by fighting outside the Showgrounds after Friday night's game.
As true fans celebrated the teams qualification for the Europa League after the 2-1 win over Glenavon, mayhem broke between some rival fans in Warden Street resulting in one police officer receiving a gash to his hand.
Police are currently reviewing video footage taken in the area at the time and are making inquiries to identify those responsible.
The PSNI's Facebook posting described the scenes as "frankly ridiculous."
It added: "This was a sad reminder of football hooliganism from the past which no one wants to see repeated.
“What we saw a group of up to 40 people fighting with each other in Warden Street Ballymena at about 10pm.
“This resulted in a police officer being injured, thankfully not seriously.
“What was a good evening out for (some) fans and families has ended in an embarrassing scene for our town.
“This is not how these teams need rewarded. This is not a picture kids need to see and certainly not one that they will want to emulate."
