VANDALS who broke into the new 20m state-of-the-art Castle Tower school in Ballymena last weekend and daubed graffiti on internal walls brought shame on their community, according to the chair of the Board of Governors, the Rev. Robert Coulter.
Local politicians also expressed disgust that a school, being constructed to cater for the needs of some of the most vulnerable children in the community, was attacked "in such a disgraceful way."
Police and the school authorities are assessing CCTV footage of the attack on Saturday, March 25, in an effort to identify the culprits.
Two plate glass windows were broken before the intruders got into the school and daubed graffiti on walls.
Fortunately the alarm was raised by security staff before more serious damage could be carried out.
Extra security measures have now been put in place and additional CCTV cameras placed in strategic positions around the site near the Seven Tower Leisure Centre.
The Rev. Coulter, said the attack was "shameful and deeply disappointing."
“We are building a world class school here, which will be a global model for special educational provision and attract international attention.
“Yet we have some young people bringing shame on the community by behaving in such an anti-social way.
“They should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves and I hope they will reflect that when they vandalise a very special and much cherished school, they are attacking the whole community."
Principal, Mr Raymond McFeeters said: "The whole Castle Tower School community are absolutely delighted with our new school building and are disgusted by the recent vandalism.
