Lawyer Emma ‘sprung’ from jail in battle for justice! thumbnailEmma Mallon and her colleagues after their jail break! GB14978 p9

KELLS based barrister Emma Mallon was among 10 local lawyers who went "behind bars" last week to raise money for International Justice Mission's (IJM) work to stop false imprisonment in Kenya.
Emma and her colleagues raised around £5,000 through the novel sponsorship event which will help fund their campaign in the African country.
Thousands of innocent men and women are being held in Kenyan prisons with insufficient evidence to charge.
In 64% of felony cases reviewed in one Kenyan study, people had been put on trial without sufficient evidence to charge them in the first place.
It's easy for a Kenyan police officer to frame and imprison an innocent person who can't afford to pay a bribe.
And without a lawyer, the innocent person will often wait years for freedom.
“We're grateful for local lawyers in Northern Ireland, who are going behind bars to highlight this important issue - and to Downpatrick-based company, George Lowden Guitars Ltd, who are sponsoring the event.
“Any money raised by them will go to our work in Kenya, advocating on behalf of people who are being exploited by those with more power and influence" said Ruth Cooke, Regional Development Executive for IJM, based in Belfast.
International Justice Mission is a global organisation that protects the poor from violence throughout the developing world. IJM partners with local authorities to rescue victims of violence, bring criminals to justice, restore survivors and strengthen justice systems.
