Digney to stand

WELL known North Antrim republican and former Ballymena Sinn Fein councillor, Monica Digney, is to stand in the North Antrim Assembly election an an independent candidate, the Guardian can reveal this week.
Mrs Digney was one of the high profile members of Sinn Fein who left the party last August, in protest at the treatment of former MLA, Daithi McKay, who resigned over his contact with loyalist blogger, Jamie Bryson, in relation to the NAMA inquiry into the so-called multi-milion pound 'bad bank' property portfolio.
She fiercely criticised the co-option of Philip McGuigan as Mr McKay's replacement and her candidacy puts her in direct competition with him for the republican vote on March 2.
Speaking to the Guardian yesterday, she said: "I am standing as an independent and I intend to work for everyone in the community, irrespective of their political viewpoint.
