Man jailed for burgling own grandmotherís home

Thursday, 26 January 2017

A 23-YEAR-OLD Ahoghill, who stabbed a couple in the Moat Bar last year, pleaded guilty last week to stealing jewellery and cash from his own grandmother.
Kurtis Mitchell, of Brookfield Gardens, was in court late last year for stabbing a man and woman in the Henry Street pub after a fight broke out over a pool table.
Initially the Crown Court Judge deferred his sentence because he had shown progress in dealing with his drug habit.
However it wasn't too long before Mitchell was back in court on further charges which resulted in him being sent to prison for the attack.
On Thursday at the local Magistrate's Court, Mitchell appeared via video link and pleaded guilty to burglary, two counts of possession of cannabis and one of possessing cocaine.
The court heard on November 11, 2016 the defendant got a taxi to the home of his grandmother in Ahoghill and broke in.
The rear patio window had been smashed and Mitchell had gone to the master bedroom where he stole items of jewellery and cash.
It was also revealed he went to a jeweller's shop in Ballymena in an attempt to have the items pawned.
When police caught up with him they found him to be in possession of cannabis and cocaine.
Mitchell's lawyer, Michael Smith, said his grandmother had been "of great assistance" to him when he had his prison sentence deferred.
Judge Peter King said "it was very distressing" that a grandson would steal from his own grandmother in "order to feed his habit".
He added: "This must have been very distressing for your family who have tried to support you."
Mitchell was sentenced to six months in prison which will run concurrent with the sentence he is serving for the Moat Bar stabbing.
This will not affect his release date in November.
