AN ambitious plan by a Ballymena Christian group to build a new school for orphaned children in Kenya has moved a step nearer.
Coaching4Christ has just returned from the African country where they are hoping to build a secondary school to complement an existing school for the children at the Vision and Passion Orphanage, which they have been supporting since 2007.
Based in Ahoghill, Coaching4Christ aims to reach out to young people and teach them about the message of Christ through sport. On April 30, 2010, a team of 16 coaches and volunteers departed for a ten day trip to Kisumu, Nyanza province, where the team was involved in a number of different ministries over the course of the week.
The current school, which previously consisted of makeshift buildings, has been expanded due to generous funding from our local churches and other donations.
It now includes a newly constructed building housing 3 classrooms and a staffroom and this has enabled the school to increase its numbers and retain its status to enable children to go from the primary to the secondary school.
Stephen Crawford, Ministry Director, explains: "We would like to build a secondary school which will provide education for 350 children, half of whom will be orphans and vulnerable children.
“Our plans are then to build a primary school, a medical centre, dormitories and a sports complex to spread the Coaching4Christ message of learning through sport.
"The task of finding a site for the school and drawing up plans was daunting but we felt God was pushing us into this territory.
"Four men owned a 9 acre site in the province and when they heard about our plans, they offered the land to us.
"Coaching4Christ are seeking support to press ahead and get the school built."
