It’s Broughshane again!
Thursday, 1 July 2010
The turnoff to the Knocken Road.
THE 'blooming marvellous' village of Broughshane was last week named Ireland's Best Kept Small Town.
Representatives from the towns heard the news at the 2010 Ireland's Best Kept Town Awards ceremony at Queen's University Belfast.
The competition brought together the top Northern Ireland towns from last year's SuperValu Best Kept Awards and their counterparts from the Tidy Towns initiative in the South.
Broughshane beat stiff competition from Lismore, Co. Waterford and Listowel in Kerry to win the Small Town award.
Doreen Muskett, President of the Northern Ireland Amenity Council (NIAC), organisers of the SuperValu Best Kept Town awards in Northern Ireland was at the ceremony and said: "The towns competing in this years awards were already winners in the North's 2009 SuperValu Best Kept Awards and Tidy Towns in the South, but these awards are the next level of competition and are much sought-after.
“Judging is not an enviable task when you are comparing the best towns and villages across Ireland, but there is a good natured spirit of competition among the entrants. We are delighted for Broughshane in winning this year."
She added; "The SuperValu Best Kept Awards in Northern Ireland and the Tidy Towns competition in the South help encourage local people to promote sustainability and improve their townscapes for everyone, including future generations.
“The all-Ireland awards give communities the opportunity to build new links and develop a wider exchange of ideas and environmental best practice."
North Antrim Ulster Unionist MLA Robert Coulter expressed his delight that Broughshane has scooped the title.
Describing the village in his constituency as 'idyllic' Robert said: "This award for this small community is most welcome and is a huge boost to all the local residents, to the local businesses, community workers and to the local council staff who have ensured that the village was litter free and full of blossoming plants.
“To those who helped - it is a huge achievement and they should be recognised for their dedication."
