Orange Hall attacks ‘sectarian and senseless’

Thursday, 4 February 2010

North Antrim politicians from all parties have strongly condemned ongoing attacks on local Orange Halls.
Vandals carried out an arson attack on Ballymaconnelly Orange Hall, which caused scorch damage to the front door, while two paint bombs were thrown at nearby Drumcon Orange Hall.
The damage was discovered last Monday but it is believed the attacks took place on Sunday.
Mervyn Storey, DUP MLA for the area commented: "Regrettably, yet again, Orange Halls have fallen victim to this type of sinister attack. These are the latest Orange Halls to suffer in this way.
“Orange Halls form the backbone of community activity and are utilised by numerous community groups ranging from mothers and toddlers groups to cultural activities. Those responsible for this attack are actually attacking the community itself.
His colleague and DUP councillor for the area, John Finlay said: "I condemn this latest attack on Ballymaconnelly and Drumcon Orange Halls and call upon the Northern Ireland Office to intervene as these attacks have been a regular event across the North Antrim area.
“Damage to halls costs the local Protestant community a considerable amount of money in repairing any damage done to property. It also exacerbates fear and tension in the local community which is not helpful to community relations."
He added: "We need leadership from the Republican community who are willing to stand idly by whilst these attacks happen."
Meanwhile, TUV leader Jim Allister said: "Two more concerted and disgraceful attacks on Orange Halls in the Rasharkin area confirm the deep-seated hatred and intolerance of some republicans towards any tradition but their own.
“If Orange Halls can't even exist without constant attack, what hope for Protestant culture and prosperity if Sinn Fein ever obtained their all-Ireland agenda? By such bigotry and violence republicans demonstrate the mindset and philosophy which shapes their 'ourselves alone' ethos."
